Are you taking care of your gifted employees?

How not to lose your best talent

What is giftedness?

Gifted is a type of neurodiversity. It can co-exist with other types of neurodiversity like ADHD, ADD, ASD - but this isn’t always the case.

There are a couple of markers most gifted humans have in common.

They are fast thinkers and learners.

They are very good at recognizing patterns.

They can connect things in new, innovative ways.

They are incredibly curious and eager to learn new things.

They can be extremely valuable for your organization - if you create an environment in which they can thrive.

Managing gifted employees

Gifted employees don’t need a lot of hand-holding - or so it may seem.

They’re smart enough to figure things out, right?

That’s what they think too - but this is actually part of the problem.

They’re not good at asking for help, and are at a high risk of burn-out or bore-out (or a combination of both).

They are uninterested in playing corporate politics - to their own detriment.

And they tend to avoid being promoted into leadership positions - even when they have a lot to contribute.

The result? Lots of unused potential, loss of talent, and sick leave.

Which is, in many cases, preventable.

How to prevent your gifted employees leaving, or burning/’boring’ out

Your smart employees may not even be aware that they fall into the ‘gifted’ category - which makes it an even harder problem to tackle.

I can help you

  • identify who these gifted employees are so you can support them;

  • give you the tools you need to empower them to perform at their full potential;

  • train leadership and HR to identify and manage gifted employees going forward.

Taking care of your gifted employees is not done in one day - it is a journey.

Identifying and empowering your gifted employees

I usually start this journey in the following way:

First, a presentation on giftedness to create awareness at a company-wide level.

Then a quick-scan to gauge where your organisation is at with regards to supporting your gifted humans.

Based on findings, we can co-create a dedicated programme to support your gifted employees.

This can include workshops, creating a dedicated coaching programme, or 1-on-1 coaching where applicable.

As a result, your talent will:

  • be happier with their job

  • contribute more

  • access a more rewarding career path

For your organisation this means

  • it will be easier to retain talent

  • reduced sick-leave and conflicts

  • more home-grown leaders

  • more diversity in leadership

  • a more inclusive culture
